Australia–East Coast Express Service upgraded once again! COSCO Shipping Lines’ A3X service has been revamped and launched, reducing transit time from South China to Melbourne to 14 days.

2026-06-26

The A3X Australia‑East Weekly Service, newly launched by COSCO Shipping Lines, will make its maiden call in Qingdao on July 27. The vessel’s port rotation is as follows: Qingdao–Shanghai–Shekou–Melbourne–Sydney–Qingdao. By introducing a new weekly service and optimizing the port‑calling sequence, the route increases the frequency of direct sailings from North China and East China to Australia’s east coast, while also adding a dedicated fast‑turnaround service between Shekou and Melbourne. This comprehensive upgrade enhances the service efficiency and network coverage of the route, establishing an efficient maritime logistics corridor linking North, East, and South China with Australia’s east coast, and providing local businesses with higher‑quality, more flexible shipping solutions.

Direct sailings to eastern Australia from the three major ports offer a time‑efficiency advantage, leading the market.
The A3X service calls at three major Chinese gateway ports—Qingdao, Shanghai, and Shekou—and offers direct sailings to Melbourne and Sydney, Australia’s two key hub ports. The route is operated by six 3,000–4,000 TEU‑class vessels, providing weekly round‑trip services with a transit time of 42 days. In terms of transit efficiency, the service delivers clear advantages: on the southbound leg, it takes just 14 days from Shekou to Melbourne, 18 days from Shanghai to Melbourne, and 21 days from Qingdao to Melbourne; from Shekou to Sydney, the journey takes 17 days, from Shanghai to Sydney 21 days, and from Qingdao to Sydney 24 days. On the northbound leg, transit times are equally optimized and accelerated: 15 days from Sydney to Qingdao, 18 days from Shanghai, and 22 days from Shekou. With a fast transit time of 14 days from Shekou to Melbourne, the service maintains a leading position in the market, offering customers in South China a more efficient logistics corridor to eastern Australia.

The launch of the A3X service marks a significant expansion of the A3 Alliance (ANL, COSCO Shipping, and OOCL) on top of its existing A3 network. With this new route, COSCO SHIPPING Lines now offers four weekly direct sailings to Australia from East China, comprehensively meeting the diverse shipping needs of customers across North, East, and South China. Complementing the existing JKN Brisbane Express and A3C/A3S Sydney Express services, the A3X route further strengthens COSCO SHIPPING’s service network in the Northeast Asia–Australia market, providing customers with more tailored options to address varying cargo types and time‑critical shipping requirements.

End-to-end integrated services, backed by Australia’s three major local resource networks.
COSCO Shipping Lines emphasizes that, leveraging its global shipping network and years of experience in supply chain services, it continues to build a localized supply chain service system in Australia, offering customers end-to-end solutions—from port to final destination and from transportation to warehousing—truly enabling “one container, all the way, with seamless support throughout.”

According to the introduction, COSCO Shipping Lines operates three major resource networks in Australia: - **Warehouse and Yard Network**: Adopting an operational model of “core‑node self‑operation plus collaboration with premium partners,” it has established proprietary warehousing and yard facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, ensuring efficient and reliable storage and cargo handling. It offers end‑to‑end solutions such as unpacking, LCL consolidation, and customized warehousing to meet diverse supply chain needs. - **Multimodal Transport Network**: Building a transport system that integrates road and rail with multimodal connectivity, it leverages the strengths of trunk railway lines and last‑mile road delivery to achieve seamless links among ports, inland terminals, warehouses, and customers, thereby enhancing overall transport efficiency. - **Last‑Mile Delivery Network**: Consolidating delivery resources across Australia’s major cities and regional markets, it tailors delivery solutions to clients’ industry characteristics and business requirements, enabling precise point‑to‑point delivery from warehouse to end‑customer and significantly improving supply chain responsiveness.

China–Australia trade continues to heat up, and the peak-season express service could not have come at a better time.
In recent years, economic and trade relations between China and Australia have improved markedly. According to Chinese customs data, in the first quarter of 2026, bilateral merchandise trade between China and Australia reached US$61.267 billion, up 40.7% year on year; China’s exports to Australia totaled US$19.685 billion, an increase of 23.5% compared with the same period last year. For the full year 2025, total Sino‑Australian trade amounted to US$206.578 billion. During the 2024–2025 fiscal year, the combined value of China‑Australia trade in goods and services reached AUD 309 billion. In this context, COSCO Shipping Lines’ launch of the A3X Australia Eastbound Express service represents a timely and targeted response to the robust demand for maritime transport amid the continued strengthening of Sino‑Australian trade.

Notably, the launch of the A3X service coincides with the traditional peak season for China–Australia trade. From July to September each year, demand for Australian mineral and agricultural imports surges in tandem with a spike in Chinese manufacturing exports. Meanwhile, Maersk announced in May the introduction of its “Qilin” express service directly linking China to Australia, with the inaugural voyage scheduled for July 24. The A3 Alliance swiftly followed suit, responding decisively with the A3X express, which made its maiden call on July 27. With these two shipping giants virtually synchronizing their deployments on the China–Australia route, the strategic significance and growth potential of this market are amply underscored. According to the A3 Alliance, the addition of A3X will bring the alliance’s port coverage along the Northeast Asia–East Coast of Australia corridor to an “unparalleled” level of comprehensiveness.

Leveraging the efficient direct services of the A3X route and the robust support of a localized supply chain in Australia, COSCO Shipping Lines is strengthening its network coverage and enhancing on-time performance, thereby facilitating the efficient export of Chinese-made goods to Australia and injecting new momentum into regional economic and trade cooperation.
